Westerton Farm Site Flooding

Bearsden Councillor Vaughan Moody has been helping local residents with drainage issues at the Westerton Farm site.

Crudens the Builder and Council Planners have realised that the Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) will not cope with all the potentail rainfall on the Westerton site.

A combination of SUDS with an underwater tank with a pipe to the water system in Deepdene Road have been brought in. To connect the pipe they have dug a trench on a pathway between the site and Deepdene Road.

The pathway (a Right of Way) is partly owned by Sheila Naughton. Cruden’s dug the trench without asking for her permission as an owner. Then to add ‘insult to injury’ they piled the earth from the trench against her fence, damaging it in places.

Vaughan commented:

“This is Crudens continuing as a bad neighbour. No wonder they are generating anger and resentment on this and other
issues.”

“The local people and I are looking for Crudens to make good the damage that has been done.”

Jo backs local farmers against unnecessary legislation

Jo Swinson MP has called on Scottish ministers to stand up for local farmers’ interests in EU discussions on sheep-tagging.

Jo Swinson MP supports local farmers

On Wednesday Jo visited Tower Farm near Torrance where she spoke to local farmer David Imrie about his views on new European plans that will require all sheep to be electronically tagged.

The proposals have been criticised as being expensive and impractical, with opponents fearing that many farmers and crofters in Scotland will be pushed out of sheep production altogether.

Scottish Liberal Democrats have been actively campaigning this week against the new proposals – even inviting a farmer with his two ewes and their lambs to the Scottish Parliament ahead of a debate on the issue.

Commenting, Jo Swinson said:

“I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Tower Farm on Wednesday – it was great to talk face-to-face about the daily routine of farm life as well as the challenges that are facing many local farmers.

“What is so shocking about the plans for electronic sheep-tagging is that Scottish ministers have failed to adequately represent the views of local farmers and their justifiable concerns about the scheme. When they should have been applying pressure in Europe for increased flexibility in the proposals, Scottish ministers were absent from negotiations.”

No smiley face for road signs

Local Councillor Vaughan Moody has called on the Council to activate speeding signs that have been unused for almost two months.

Cllr Vaughan Moody with the inactive speed sign

A few years ago the Council agreed to purchase and operate road signs that could be moved from place to place. If a driver went by to fast then a’sad face’ would appear and a ’smiley face’ if he drove at the right speed.

In early April almost two months ago two signs were placed on Buchanan Drive and Milngavie Road respectively. Neither has worked since day one.

Bearsden South Councillor Vaughan Moody said:

“The situation is a bad joke. These signs have not worked for 2 months and it doesn’t appear as if they will be dealt
with anytime soon. Both the Council and the supplier should fix them as soon as possible.

When signs like these were in Ledcameroch Road and Maxwell Avenue they were effective at reducing traffic speed.  Local residents are hoping the signs will be fixed quickly.”

Drainage problems in Bishopbriggs South

Bishopbriggs South local campaigner Alastair McPhee met with Jo Swinson MP today to discuss the continuing drainage problem at the corner of Emerson Road West and Crowhill Road.

Alastair is angry that for the third time in as many years the residents of Forrester Court and the Margaret Blackwood Housing Association have had to put up with this level of disruption.

Jo will write to Scottish Water to find out why a solution to the problem was not found sooner and why it has been necessary for this level of disruption to happen year on year.

Milngavie and Bearsden belong together

Jo has criticised the Boundary Commission’s revised proposals for the Scottish Parliament constituency boundaries.

The Boundary Commission’s revised proposals for the boundaries Scottish Parliamentary constituencies, released this week, show only small changes to the current arrangement. Strathkelvin & Bearsden still form one constituency, while Clydebank and Milngavie form another.

Jo has campaigned to combine Milngavie and Bearsden in a single constituency, and the previous set of proposals did so, in a new “Milngavie and Bishopbriggs” constituency. Jo launched a campaign to keep Bearsden’s name in the title, as it would have been the biggest town in the constituency, but in a surprise move the Boundary Commission has abandoned plans to combine the three towns.

The Commission is inviting the public to submit their views on the proposals by 21st June 2009.

Commenting, Jo said:

“It is a great shame that the Boundary Commission is clinging to the status quo, which creates an artificial divide between Milngavie and Bearsden. The two towns have long formed a natural community with many common concerns, and last year’s proposal to join them together under one MSP made good sense, as well as having public support. Why they have abandoned that plan after so much consultation is a mystery.

“I will be writing to the Boundary Commission to urge them to reconsider, and I would strongly encourage Milngavie and Bearsden residents also to make their views heard by 21st June.”
