East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson recently met local tennis player Maia Lumsden who is being supported by a Bank of Scotland ‘Local Hero’ grant as she aims to impress at this month’s Junior Wimbledon championships. Maia, who grew up in Bearsden and now lives in Lenzie, spoke of her excitement at taking part in this renowned tournament.
Jo met Maia at Kirkintilloch’s Bank of Scotland branch and heard all about her training for Wimbledon and the support she is receiving from being a ‘Local Hero’. This scheme was established by Bank of Scotland to help young competitors juggle the demands of training alongside work or studying.
Commenting after the visit, Jo said:
“It was lovely to meet Maia and the Bank of Scotland team in Kirkintilloch to hear about this fantastic initiative to support young, local sports stars.
“Maia’s dedication to her sport was inspiring, and I know she is making great sacrifices in pursuit of her goals. A grant from the Bank of Scotland can provide an invaluable boost to a young competitor’s career, and it’s great to see it go to a local girl.
“As a highly regarded local sports star I know Maia’s progress at Junior Wimbledon will be followed closely by many. I wish her the best of luck in the tournament, and hope she can conjure some of the spirit of last year from Scotland’s most famous tennis player.”
