Gurkha Justice

For more than 5 years, the Liberal Democrats have been campaigning for a better deal for serving and retired Gurkha soldiers. Jo met a delegation of Gurkha soldiers in 2004, before being elected as MP for East Dunbartonshire.

Thanks to pressure from the Lib Dems, the battle to secure a fair deal for the Gurkhas has received a huge boost. Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg’s motion to allow retired Gurkhas to settle in the UK was backed by MPs despite strong opposition by Gordon Brown and the Labour Government. This historic vote in the House of Commons was the first time a Government had lost an opposition day motion for over thirty years. It was also Gordon Brown’s first Parliamentary defeat.
