Local Liberal Democrats have responded to the ongoing closure of the canal bridges at Twechar and Bonnybridge with dismay.
Following the closure of the lever bridges on the Forth and Clyde Canal at Twechar and Bonnybridge, boat traffic has been unable to pass through the canals from coast to coast. Lib Dem Councillor for Kirkintilloch East and North and Twechar Susan Murray said "I am very concerned about the effect the bridge being out of use will have on the local community. I know that Twechar has close links with the Croy Basin but now passing boat traffic has been stopped this could mean fewer visitors to the area."
Lib Dem Co-Leader of East Dunbartonshire Council commented "We will work with Scottish Canals and other affected Councils to encourage the Scottish Government to invest in getting the canal fully open as quickly as possible. It is very important to the economy of East Dunbartonshire, with the annual Kirkintilloch Canal Festival attracting thousands of visitors each year. We also want to see further growth in the number of tourist boats using the scenic Forth & Clyde as a holiday route."
