Liberal Democrats propose a universal state pension to end the disadvantaging of women and carers

Jo Swinson has accused the Government of letting down today’s pensioners in its Pensions Bill.

The Bill, published today, proposes to raise the state pension age to 68 by 2050 and restore the link between earnings and the basic state pension.

Jo said:

“The Pensions Bill does not carry good news for the 20,000 pensioners in East Dunbartonshire today. They may end up waiting until 2015 for the Government to restore the link between pensions and earnings.

“If the basic level of the state pension is not raised, too little incentive will be given to people to save for retirement. A universal state pension, set at a decent level, is needed to encouraging private saving, while also making the pensions system fairer for women.”
