Jo Swinson has encouraged local readers to sign up to give away copies of their favourite book on World Book Night, March 5th 2011.
The World Book Night project will give away one million books by 20,000 selected readers across the UK, in order to celebrate and champion books and reading. On 5th March there will be events, parties, and celebrations, many in bookshops and libraries which will be opening late to host the festivities.
The campaign is looking 20,000 people who would like to give away copies of their favourite book, from a list that features top authors such as John Le Carré and Philip Pullman. ‘Givers’ will also play an active role in the build up to World Book Night, helping to inspire others with their passion for reading.
Commenting, Jo said:
“World Book Night is a wonderful initiative that will encourage people – young and old – to get together and share the joy of reading.
“Books are so important in developing our curiosity and creativity so it is fantastic that World Book Night is celebrating this timeless activity. I have signed up to this project to become a ‘book giver’ and hope that here in East Dunbartonshire there will be some unique celebrations of our own on March 5th!”
The deadline to become a ‘giver’ for World Book Night is January 4th. Details of how to apply can be found on their website.
