Britain’s best interests are served by staying in the European Union, says local MP Jo Swinson.
Following on from the ‘In or Out’ debates between Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and UKIP leader Nigel Farage and in the run up to May’s European Elections, Jo is clear that a strong British economy relies on our EU membership.
The Liberal Democrats are the only party actively campaigning to stay in the EU and prepared to stand up for the benefits of Britain in Europe. Not only would leaving the EU be damaging for British workers, it would also damage our credibility in the world and restrict attempts to tackle cross border crime and climate change.
Commenting after the debates, Jo said:
“The Liberal Democrats want Britain to stay in the EU because we are fighting for a stronger economy.
“1 in every 10 British jobs relies on our EU membership and UK businesses get access to free trade in the world’s largest single market, which is worth around £11 trillion in GDP and has over 500 consumers.
“Scotland also benefits hugely from EU membership. Research suggests that around 300,000 Scottish jobs are supported by the EU, and the Liberal Democrats in Brussels helped deliver an EU budget that will see Scotland receive almost £6 billion in EU funding over the next 7 years”.
