Jo encourages local residents to honour Holocaust victims

Jo Swinson MP for East Dunbartonshire is encouraging local residents to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January 2014 and to commit to speaking up and speaking out against prejudice.

‘Journeys’ is the theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2014.  This year local residents can learn how journeys themselves became part of genocide, and how the journeys undertaken were often experiences of persecution and terror for so many people who suffered in the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution and in the subsequent genocides.  They can also learn about the life stories of journeys that brought survivors to the UK and how, in many instances, journeys of return have been part of the experience of rebuilding.

Holocaust Memorial Day marks the anniversary of the liberation in 1945 of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the infamous concentration and extermination camp, which Jo visited with pupils from Lenzie Academy, Douglas Academy, Boclair Academy and Turnbull High School in 2009.

Commenting, Jo said:

“Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity to remember the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.

“It is vitally important that we both remember and learn from the events of the Holocaust – and continue to challenge all forms of bigotry.

"Seeing the camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau in 2009 will always serve as a reminder as to why we need to fight prejudice. I made a short video after my experience which can be found here http://bit.ly/Alessons.”
