Jo joins National Climate March

Jo Swinson at climate change march in London

Jo called for the Government to invest in new green industries

Jo Swinson was among thousands of protesters who took to the streets of London today to demand action from the UK government on climate change.

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg addressed crowds of protesters in Parliament Square, calling on the Government not to neglect the fight against climate change in the face of the global recession.

Commenting after the protest, Jo Swinson said:

“The huge numbers who turned out for the National Climate March are testament to the fact that, despite the economic pressures currently facing families and businesses up and down the country, climate change is an issue that the Government must not neglect.

“Clearly, it is difficult at the moment to keep climate change high on the agenda when people’s jobs and homes are under threat. But the flip-side of the issue is that there are opportunities to develop green industries and create green-collar jobs that the Government is currently failing to cash in on.

“Instead of a third runway at Heathrow and a new coal-fired power station at Kingsnorth, investment should be going into renewable energy and sustainable housing for the future. The Government should be investing in the new, green industries that will drive the country out of recession.”
