Jo Swinson MP has launched a campaign to save East Dunbartonshire Farmers’ Markets.

Farmers’ Markets in East Dunbartonshire have come under threat with the news that East Dunbartonshire Town Centre Management Ltd has ceased trading.

Jo has written to East Dunbartonshire Council Chief Executive Sue Bruce to stress the urgent need for action to safeguard the future of local Farmers’ Markets.

She has also launched an online petition, urging East Dunbartonshire Council to step in to guarantee the future of the Farmers’ Markets in Milngavie and Kirkintilloch.

Commenting on the campaign, Jo said:

“At a time when Farmers’ Markets are increasing in popularity and prevalence across the country, it is very concerning that our local Farmers’ Markets are under threat.

“Customers enjoy the high quality local produce, while the markets benefit not just the stallholders but the wider East Dunbartonshire economy. By offering local goods, Farmers’ Markets also reduce food mileage, improving environmental sustainability.

“East Dunbartonshire Council should now step in to safeguard the future of the Farmers’ Markets. I have written to Sue Bruce to stress this point, and have launched an online petition to help local residents to get behind the campaign.”
