Jo pledges to put the ‘HER in Hero’ to support women in technology

Jo Swinson MP for East Dunbartonshire signed the ‘HER in Hero’ pledge last week as part of a campaign organised by Little Miss Geek

Jo signed the pledge ahead of Ada Lovelace Day on 15th October – an annual celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths.

Little Miss Geek pledges to celebrate female heroes of the past and present, in order to inspire young girls to become female heroes of the future.  Currently, the UK’s tech workforce is only 17% female, and over the last 10 years this has dropped by 0.5% each year. Little Miss Geek estimates that by 2043 less than 1% of the technology workforce will be women despite women being big consumers of technology.

Little Miss Geek is providing resources to teachers so they can incorporate female heroes into the curriculum and their assemblies. The campaign is asking for schools across the UK to host a HER in Hero assembly, and has already reached 5,000 girls.

Commenting, Jo said:

“We need to make sure that women and girls are entering into this exciting and vital area of work so we don’t lose out on a considerable pool of talent

“I would encourage all local schools to visit the HER in Hero website to sign the pledge, download the resources and host a HER in Hero assembly at their school.  For more information visithttp://littlemissgeek.com/her-in-hero.”
