Jo Swinson MP is celebrating London’s winning bid to host the Olympic Games in 2012.
The announcement was made today in Singapore that the Games will come to the capital in seven years time.
Jo is Liberal Democrat spokesperson on Culture, Media and Sport. She has been following the bid closely and lending her support in the run up to today’s decision.
Jo expressed her enthusiasm for the winning bid, saying, “I am delighted about this tremendous success. London is a great city and a deserving winner. The work to prepare for the 2012 Games starts now.
“The success of the bid was its understanding of the positive effect that the Olympic Games will have on the whole country. I’m sure the people of Glasgow will give Olympic footballers a warm welcome to Hampden Park.
“The young people of East Dunbartonshire, as well as those up and down the country, now have a great incentive to get involved in sport. It would be wonderful if an athlete from East Dunbartonshire could achieve success on home soil.”
Commenting on the decision, Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy said, “This is fantastic news for the whole of Britain. The 2012 Olympics will be a great source of inspiration for the next generation of British athletes. I send my congratulations to all of the team who made the bid a reality.”
