Jo welcomes free school meals for local pupils

East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson is pleased that from this week all P1-P3 pupils in Scotland will be entitled to a free school meal.

In England, 1.5 million five to seven year olds are already receiving free schools meals thanks to the Liberal Democrats in the UK Government. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg announced this policy with a visit to Lairdsland Primary School in Kirkintilloch in September 2013, and whilst it has taken the SNP Government some time to deliver, Jo is now pleased that local pupils in East Dunbartonshire will receive a free and healthy meal every school day.

Jo said:

“The Liberal Democrats have long advocated the benefits of a daily free and healthy meal for school pupils. Evidence clearly shows that this makes a significant difference to pupils’ learning and health. As of September 2014, over 98% of schools in England were delivering a hot meal every day to all children aged 5-7.

“The SNP Government were slow on the uptake with free early years education that the Lib Dems were delivering in England and they have still failed to match what is on offer to families south of the border.  In the UK Government the Lib Dems have prioritised finding the money for free school meals, and the SNP must now ensure that councils in Scotland have the support to provide these meals so local schoolchildren can get the best start in life.”
