Merlwood Nursery in Lenzie has been awarded a Silver Eco Schools Award for its efforts to promote environmental sustainability.
The nursery teaches children to recycle, turn off lights and taps when not using them, and has even written its own Eco Song. To prevent unwanted books from going to waste, Merlwood Nursery runs its own book swap, where books are exchanged for a small amount of money, which has been used to adopt a Siberian tiger named Lyuti.
The Eco Schools programme is managed in Scotland by the charity Keep Scotland Beautiful and funded by the Scottish Government. The Silver Award is the second step on the way to achieving the ultimate award, a Green Flag.

“I was very impressed by the Eco Song the children sang for me and I think it’s great that they’re developing enthusiasm for protecting their environment from such an early age.”
