Nick Clegg went to Bournemouth for his first conference as Lib Dem leader
Jo Swinson has backed Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, as he sets out the party’s vision for a fairer Britain.
The Liberal Democrats’ autumn conference is currently taking place in Bournemouth, running from Sat 13th to Wed 17th September. The party is placing the message of fairness at the heart of policies on tax, education and the environment.
Commenting from the conference in Bournemouth, Jo said:
“People in East Dunbartonshire and across the country are feeling the pressure of the credit crunch and rising food prices. Strong political leadership is needed as the country faces a challenging period. In Nick Clegg, we have a figure who is capable of delivering the leadership that our country and our society needs.
“After more than ten years in power, Labour has failed to prepare the country for the economic storm we are now weathering. What’s more, the party is now completely paralysed because of in-fighting over Gordon Brown’s dithering and lack of leadership. Meanwhile, David Cameron’s Tories continue to offer slick, shallow PR but are clearly not concerned with creating a fairer society.
“As a party, the Liberal Democrats understand the problems facing individuals and families struggling to make ends meet. This week we are setting out plans to build a fair society that offers opportunities for all and addresses the stresses that today’s families are under.
“We will deliver this through tax cuts for those who are struggling, investing more in education for the poorest children from their first day at pre-school and giving Britain a greener future by taking ambitious steps to cut carbon emissions.”
