Lib Dems Welcome Bridge Fix Funding

Local Liberal Democrats have welcomed the news that the Forth & Clyde will re-open coast to coast.  The Scottish Government has announced funding of  £1.6 million to repair the canal bridges at Twechar and Bonnybridge.

Lib Dem Councillor for Kirkintilloch East and North and Twechar said “I am pleased that the Scottish Government has finally come up with the funding – but they must do more.  The canal is an important tourist asset for East Dunbartonshire and the rest of Scotland and the bridges should never have been allowed to fall into a state of disrepair in the first place.  Our inland waterways need to be properly funded so they can be properly maintained”

“This has highlighted the lack of investment in the canal.  I and others have been asking for action on the maintenance of the Luggie Aqueduct in Kirkintilloch which has trees growing out of its structure.  Liberal Democrats as part of the council administration have been pressing Scottish Canals and the Scottish Government for several weeks to ensure that the bridges are repaired.  We welcome this new grant, but more is needed.”
