MP backs campaign to support local social enterprises

Local MP Jo Swinson is backing a campaign to get local residents buying from social enterprises to boost the local economy.

Jo spoke at the launch of the UK’s first Social Saturday at a House of Commons reception for MPs and some of the UK’s best-loved social enterprises, including the Big Issue and Divine Chocolate.

Social Saturday will take place on 13th September 2014 and is designed to boost the number of consumers buying from Britain’s 70,000 plus social enterprises; businesses that reinvest their profits for good.

Commenting on the launch, Jo said:

“I wholeheartedly support this year’s Social Saturday and want to see local people support social enterprises in our area like the Coach House in Balmore and East Dunbartonshire’s Food Co-Ops.

“Social enterprises across the country bring huge benefits to their local communities. What we all want to see are businesses acting as a force for good, creating jobs and helping build a stronger, more sustainable economy. It’s a great opportunity for all of us to become more aware of how our spending can make a real difference.”
