MP welcomes “landmark figure” of under 500 unemployed

Jo Swinson MP has welcomed the news that local unemployment has fallen below 500 for the first time since Jo was elected East Dunbartonshire’s MP in May 2005.

In November, there were 498 unemployed people locally, a fall of 32 from October and from 701 the year before.

Jo said:

“The economic recovery continues to gain momentum across the UK. Unemployment has fallen below 2 million and is at its lowest level in six years; 30.8m are now in work and over 1.7m new jobs have been created since the Liberal Democrats entered Government in 2010.

“I am delighted that East Dunbartonshire has one of the lowest levels of unemployment across the whole country, and we have reached the landmark figure of under 500 out of work.

“Our small businesses are the drivers of this recovery. Half of employers have told me they intend to recruit extra staff in the next year, and 900 local companies have taken advantage of the Government’s Employment Allowance scheme – a £2,000 cut in their National Insurance bill which can be put towards hiring new employees or investing in the company.”
