Jo Swinson MP for East Dunbartonshire is welcoming a government report commissioned by Liberal Democrat Cabinet Minister and Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander to look at alternatives to the UK’s nuclear deterrent programme.
The report sets out a number of alternatives to the UK’s current system which maintains 4 nuclear submarines. A review of the existing set-up is due in 2016.
Commenting Jo said:
“This report is one of the most substantial contributions to British nuclear weapons policy since the 1960s.
“It makes it clear that there are more options than we have been led to believe and we can now have a fact-based discussion on a replacement for the Trident system.
“The Tories are unlikely to shift from their view that a like-for-like replacement is the only choice and we’re still waiting for Labour to make their views clear on the issue.
“If Labour had carried out a similar review of Trident alternatives during their 13 years in government the debate may have been very different now.”
