Scots Labour stung by the yellow peril

Jo Swinson and John Lyons could not have cut more contrasting figures as they arrived at the Bishopbriggs Leisure Drome on Thursday night. Swinson, the youthful Liberal Democrat candidate, dressed in a powder blue suit, pink top and white stilettos, swept garrulously into the modern sports hall like a publicity hungry Holywood starlet, swarmed by photographers and gushing supporters.

Minutes later the solitary, haunted figure of Lyons, the Labour candidate, slipped through the doors almost unnoticed. Dressed in a crumpled black suit and red tie he shuffled in a corner, spurning occasional approaches from party aides and barely raising his eyes from the floor.

The result from the East Dunbartonshire seat had yet to be announced, but from the body language of the candidates it was a forgone conclusion. The seat Lyons had held since 2001 was about to fall to the Lib Dems and with it the balance of power in Scotland was shifting
