Stressful conditions for local NHS staff as 9,583 are injured at work

East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson is very concerned that in three years over 9,500 staff at local NHS hospitals in Glasgow have been injured at work.

Across Scotland figures from 2011-2013 have revealed that NHS staff suffered over 35,000 injuries including bites, stress, and slips, trips and falls. The figures, obtained by the Scottish Liberal Democrats through Freedom of Information laws, exposed a wide range of risks to health service staff in their day-to-day work.

Jo has said that SNP mismanagement has led to stressful conditions, with under-staffing and lack of capacity adding to pressures felt by health boards.

Jo said:

“We know that accidents can occur in hospitals especially during specific medical procedures or because of potentially unsafe behaviour or conditions. However, there is never an excuse to cut corners and health boards must do everything within their power to ensure staff are appropriately trained to prevent accidents.

“Over 9,500 staff suffered injuries in Glasgow’s hospitals in three years – the highest number in Scotland. This poor safety record will be worrying for local residents who use these hospitals.

“SNP ministers must make life more manageable for health boards by alleviating the pressure they have heaped upon them in recent years.”
