Torture inquiry long overdue – Jo

Jo has welcomed the Government’s announcement of an independent inquiry into Britain’s involvement in the torture of detainees.

The Prime Minister last week announced that there would be an independent judge-led inquiry into Britain’s role in the rendition and torture of terror suspects since September 11th bombings in 2001.

Commenting, Jo said:

“This announcement is long overdue. Now they are out of power Labour can no longer cover up their shameful record. A full judicial inquiry was a key Liberal Democrat manifesto pledge, and I am delighted that we now have the opportunity to implement it. Only by getting the facts out in the open can we begin to restore Britain’s tarnished reputation as a defender of human rights.”

The Liberal Democrats were the only major party with a pledge to hold an inquiry into allegations of British Government complicity in torture in their General Election manifesto.
