Carers Link continues to make a difference

Following this year’s Carers Week, Jo Swinson MP has visited a local service dedicated to the needs of East Dunbartonshire’s thousands of carers.

Jo enjoyed a catch up with staff and a group of local carers at Carers Link in Milngavie, before lunch and a Q&A session. Carers took the chance to ask Jo about Government policy in relation to carers, as well as pressing local issues like the Kilmardinny development.

Milngavie Carers Link provides support and a listening ear to carers and their families, including regular ‘blether groups’ for carers in similar situations, as well as information and advice.

Commenting, Jo Swinson said:

“Carers’ huge contributions to society are often overlooked, but nearly 12,000 people are carers here in East Dunbartonshire. Since it opened in 2004 a huge number of people have benefited from Carers Link’s support and advice, whether over the phone, in person or in a group.

“There are a huge number of pressures on carers, from the financial to the emotional, so I am pleased that the Government is providing the NHS with an extra £400million over the next 4 years to give carers more breaks from their day-to-day responsibilities. I hope the Scottish Government will put their share of the extra cash toward support for carers too.”

The Government announced in November that it will provide an additional £400million to the NHS over the next four years to enable more carers to take breaks from their caring responsibilities, delivering on a Liberal Democrat manifesto commitment to provide respite care for the hardest working carers (i.e. carers working over 50 hours a week).
