Jo has welcomed the new Harry Potter book for encouraging more children to read
Local MP Jo Swinson has welcomed the launch of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
Jo was up bright and early on Saturday morning to buy her copy from the Milngavie Bookshop. She has also tabled a Parliamentary Early Day Motion welcoming the launch.
Jo commented, “In between surgeries and catching up with emails from constituents, I’ve been dipping in to the pages of the new Harry Potter book when I’ve taken time out to relax. Just like the previous books, it’s a fantastic story and I’m savouring every page. Importantly, the books are also introducing lots of children to the joys of reading, which is very encouraging.”
She continued (with a smile), “Reading Chapter One, I’m sure children up and down the country will wonder whether Prime Minister Tony Blair has a special portrait in the corner of his office acting as his direct line to the ‘Other Minister’.”

HARRY POTTER AND ENCOURAGING CHILDREN’S READING
This House welcomes the launch of ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ and the excitement and enthusiasm for reading the series has sparked among children; praises J K Rowling for capturing the imagination of children and adults alike with her magical storytelling; notes the new research by the Federation of Children’s Book Groups that found that 59% of children think that Harry Potter books have helped them to improve their reading skills and that 67% of teachers say that Harry Potter has helped turn non-readers into readers; and recommends this book to Members in search of an entertaining read for their holiday.
