Have your say on future of the cheque – Jo

Jo has urged local residents to make their views known on the future of the cheque.

The Payments Council, representing high street banks, announced a target date of 2018 to phase out the cheque last year, but has not yet come up with a suitable alternative payment method.

Jo has now called for as many people as possible to submit their views to the Payments Council, so banks can consider the huge costs of withdrawing the cheque system.

Commenting, Jo said:

“There has been understandable opposition to the Payments Council’s decision, and the Government has made it clear that until a credible alternative is developed, there is no case for abolishing the cheque.

“A huge number of people here in East Dunbartonshire will be disadvantaged by the cheque’s withdrawal. The banks must recognise the needs of groups who depend on its use, like the elderly, charities and small businesses. I hope local people will write to the Payments Council and let their views be known.”
