Commenting on the Council’s decision to grant a planning application that will see a new Waitrose store in Milngavie, Jo said:
“The news that Waitrose will open a new store in Milngavie, including the jobs that will come with it, will be welcomed by many local residents, the West of Scotland Rugby Club and others.
“However we also need to be vigilant about the potential loss of trade for the local shops in the village.
“While Waitrose and the developer Town Centre Securities claim the store will bring new shoppers into the area, by their own estimate there will be a 6% loss of trade for stores in the precinct.
“In these difficult times when businesses are struggling I wouldn’t want to see any local traders having to shut up shop, so I encourage residents to make a point of continuing to use our excellent local shops – or we could lose them.”
