Jo praises children’s charity volunteers

Jo Swinson MP has praised the work of volunteers during a visit to Lenzie charity Reality at Work in Scotland.

Reality has been working since 1994 with emotionally, behaviourally or socially disadvantaged young people, giving them the chance to participate in outdoor activities and residential events designed to help improve their quality of life.

During the visit, Jo met with staff members and discussed the work of Reality with Project Manager Richard Morrison.

Commenting on the visit and the work carried out by Reality, Jo said:

“I was very impressed by the hard work and dedication of the staff at Reality. It takes a special type of person to volunteer their services to helping disadvantaged young people at such events. Clearly though, the staff at Reality find the work they do very rewarding.

“The young people helped by Reality experience a range of problems, often stemming from a difficult upbringing or family background. Charities such as Reality play a vital role in helping address these problems, allowing the young people involved to grow into valued members of society.”

Reality Project Manager Richard Morrison commented:

“I was grateful to Jo for taking the time to come along, meet us and get a first-hand view of this locally based national project. The role of volunteers is very special for these young people and is now recognised in Westminster as well as Holyrood. By raising the profile of Reality, we hope to extend the scope of the project and reach out to more young people in need of help.”

Reality at Work in Scotland is an interdenominational Christian Organisation which aims to work with, support and improve the quality of life for young people in disadvantaged social and economic circumstances.

Help is available for young people in Scotland aged 9 to 16 plus who are emotionally, behaviourally or socially disadvantaged, mainly known to social workers and who would benefit by having a time away from their usual circumstances – either home, school or social surroundings.

Reality provides residential activity events incorporating a wide range of outdoor activities such as water based sports, mountain biking and archery, as well as a variety of entertaining positive evening activities.
