Jo Swinson part of selection panel for Serjeant At Arms

Local MP for East Dunbartonshire one of just three MPs chosen for important task

Jo Swinson MP has been asked by John Bercow, Speaker of the House of Commons, to help select the chamber’s next Serjeant at Arms, the official responsible for security and keeping order in the Commons part of the Parliamentary Estate.

Traditionally the holder has been recommended by the Speaker to the ruling Monarch, but Mr Bercow has instead chosen to ask MPs from the three major parties to help him make a recommendation.

Commenting Jo said:

The Serjeant at Arms plays such an important role in the Commons, not just for MPs, dignitaries and staff but for and members of the public visiting Parliament too. Replacing Jill Pay, the former Serjeant at Arms, with the right person is a big task and I’m honoured to have been chosen to be part of the selection panel.”
