Local MP Jo Swinson brings Parliament Week to East Dunbartonshire!

Jo Swinson MP for East Dunbartonshire will champion democracy in the local area by encouraging students to take part in Parliament Week 2012. The annual national week to build greater awareness of and engagement with parliamentary democracy in the UK, is organised by the House of Commons and House of Lords and takes place between 19 to 25 November

Jo is encouraging students to take part by watching the live screening of the UK Youth Parliament from the House of Commons on Friday 23rd November, and organising their own debates at school.

Commenting Jo said:

"I am pleased once again to support this exciting initiative exploring how democracy affects citizens and how they can participate in it. I will be writing to schools in the local area and sending posters to help spread the word about Parliament Week.

"I often speak to students in East Dunbartonshire who are keen to find out more about Parliament and politics. I would urge anyone interested to visit the Parliament Week website to learn more about the history of Parliament, the work of Parliamentarians and democracy atwww.parliamentweek.org."

Parliament Week takes place between 19th to 25 November and is an annual series of events and activities, co-ordinated by the House of Commons and House of Lords, which aim to raise awareness of Parliament and encourage people to engage with the UK's democratic system and its institutions. Parliament Week looks at the people, places and events that have shaped democracy in the UK and how to get your voice heard about the issues that matter to you. Parliament Week also presents an opportunity to look at how our democracy works today and discuss its future.

As part of Parliament Week, there is a programme of activities across the UK that explore how and why the House of Commons and the House of Lords matter to everyone. A number of organisations, such as the Royal Society of Arts and the National Children's Bureau, are joining with Parliament to host events about democracy and political engagement. BBC Question Time is being broadcast from historic Westminster Hall on Thursday 22nd November and the Hansard Society is hosting 'Young People's Question Time'.
