Make Poverty History march makes history

Jo Swinson MP was among the 225,000 people marching in Edinburgh on Saturday to Make Poverty History.

Local organisations from East Dunbartonshire joined groups and individuals from across Scotland, the UK and the world to stage the largest ever single protest in Scotland.

The marchers formed a white band around Scotland’s capital, calling for fair trade, dropping the debt and more and better aid for the world’s poorest countries.

Jo Swinson commented, “The atmosphere was very positive, with so many people uniting for a common purpose. I hope the G8 leaders will listen to the message – we have the wealth ad technology to make poverty history, all we need now is the political will.

Jo continued, ” East Dunbartonshire was well represented; I was marching alongside constituents from Milngavie, Bearsden and Torrance, and I know there were many other local people there that came in coaches from Bishopbriggs, Bearsden and Milngavie.”
