MP welcomes more excellent local unemployment figures

East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson is delighted to see local unemployment fall to its lowest level for six years, in line with a continuing drop across Scotland and the UK.

Unemployment fell locally for the sixth month in a row and is now at its lowest point since May 2008, before the financial crash. In the last year across East Dunbartonshire there has been a fall in 329 people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance.

Commenting, Jo said:

“Once again we are seeing hugely positive figures for unemployment right across the county, a sign that the UK economy is well on the road to recovery. Scotland is seeing record numbers of people in work, which is further evidence of the benefits of a co-ordinated and successful economic plan for all parts of the United Kingdom.

“Local employers have benefitted from the Coalition Government reforms for businesses, led by the Liberal Democrat Business Secretary Vince Cable. Half of business owners in East Dunbartonshire have told me they plan to hire more staff in the next year and many are taking advantage of our £2,000 assistance with national insurance contributions, improved access to financial support and cutting of red tape in order to recruit more employees.”
