Merkland School and Campsie View School will merge to form a new Additional Support Needs (ASN) school.
The site identified is the area around Waterside football pitch. The Council will submit a planning application towards the end of the year which will show details of the proposed layout including the area outside the school which will have an adventure playground and a full-size grass football pitch.
The school aims to offer as much support as possible for children with a range of additional support needs in a mainstream setting within their own community.
Local residents support a new ASN school but concerned about the loss of the football pitch.
The Lib Dem team in East Dunbartonshire are determined to ensure that the new school will have positive impact on the Waterside community.
Cllr Susan Murray said “I hope we can find a way forward which is acceptable to the community of Waterside. I have secured a commitment from the Council that, should planning permission be granted on this site, a full-size grass pitch will remain for use by the community in Waterside after the new ASN school is built.”
