Private tenants can reclaim fees for past five years – Jo

Local MP Jo Swinson has welcomed new clarity surrounding the fees that letting agents and landlords charge private tenants in Scotland.

Last week the Scottish Government stated that letting agent fees for additional charges such as reference checks, credit checks and inventory feeshave been and will remain unlawful.

Commenting Jo said:

"This is great news for constituents who have been forced to pay unfair fees.

"While I welcome the law's clarification I only wish it had gone further and allowed tenants to claim back charges from the last ten years.

"I will be advising constituents who've contacted me on this issue and urging local residents to write to their letting agents to reclaim these fees. Shelter Scotland has set up a website to help at "
