Sign up to stem cell register to save lives – Jo

Jo Swinson MP has encouraged young men in East Dunbartonshire to sign up to help save the lives of people with blood cancer.

All MPs have been asked to try to recruit at least ten men between the ages of 18-30 to join the Anthony Nolan stem cell register. Despite this age group being the best source of stem cells and accounting for 80% of current donations, they make up just 19% of the total register.

The Anthony Nolan charity’s register matches donors willing to donate their blood stem cells to people in desperate need of life-saving transplants. Jo has written to local youth groups and sports teams asking young men to sign up.

Commenting, Jo said:

“1,600 people in the UK currently need a potentially life-saving stem cell transplant, but at present Anthony Nolan can only find a matching donor for half the people who come to them. By stepping forward to join the register, young men in East Dunbartonshire could give patients the chance of life.

“Every new donor could be saving lives by Christmas, and signing up is easy – just visit and enter the code CJJ3.”
