The Minister claimed members of the SNP government have turned down offers of cooperation on the Commonwealth Games

The SNP’s reluctance to cooperate over preparations for Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games is a disgrace, according to Jo Swinson.

Jo was responding to comments made at Westminster by Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell that SNP Ministers have refused meetings to share expertise ahead of the 2012 Olympics and 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Jo commented:

“If what the Minister says is true, it is disgraceful that the SNP are passing up opportunities to share experience and best practice with the UK Government on these two major sporting events.

“The whole of Scotland wants the 2014 Commonwealth Games to be a landmark event in Scottish sport. There is no way that petty SNP and Labour squabbling should be getting in the way of the crucial preparations for the games.

“Despite having over 7 per cent of the UK’s businesses, Scottish companies have won just 1.2 per cent of the 2012 Olympics contracts awarded so far. It makes total sense for Scottish firms to gain valuable practical experience on Olympic contracts, but the political support that should be going to Scottish businesses bidding for the contracts is letting them down.”
