SPS stalling over public meeting

After offering to organise a public meeting with Bishopbriggs residents over prison plans, the Scottish Prison Service is now putting it off.

Despite calls from elected representatives for the meeting to be held as soon as possible, the SPS has stated in a letter to Jo Swinson that “We will do that when more detail of the proposed new establishment is available.”

Commenting, Jo said:

“This situation is becoming absurd. By delaying the meeting, SPS is alienating local residents before its discussion with them has even begun. It is in everyone’s interests to resolve this as quickly as possible.”

Responding to an SPS spokesperson’s denial in last week’s Bishopbriggs Herald that the SPS had not returned her phone calls, Jo said:

“My office made calls to the SPS on an almost daily basis for over a fortnight and left many messages. How they can deny this beggars belief, and the way they have dealt with this matter raises some serious questions about the attitude of the SPS toward elected representatives and the public.”
