Adam Harley, Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate for Strathkelvin & Bearsden, has written to Morrisons calling for improved upkeep of land beside the supermarket in Bishopbriggs town centre.

The site, located at the heart of the town centre, has been a frequent source of frustration for local residents. While longer term plans exist for the area to become a civic space, works are not expected to begin for some time.

Last year, Harley wrote to East Dunbartonshire Council to enquire about the timeline for a new civic space. The council confirmed that if funding is approved, contractors will be appointed in spring, with completion of the works anticipated in late 2026 or early 2027.

Mr Harley says the current condition of the town centre had been raised repeatedly while he has been out speaking to residents locally.

“I’ve knocked on hundreds of doors across Bishopbriggs in recent months, and this site comes up again and again,” he said.

“People understand that bigger regeneration projects take time, but they’re understandably fed up with damaged fencing and a lack of basic upkeep in the meantime. It’s right in the town centre and it affects how people feel about Bishopbriggs.”

In his letter, Mr Harley asked Morrisons to consider simple, temporary measures such as securing fencing and carrying out basic maintenance while longer-term council works are pending.

“Local people asked me to raise this and do something about it, so that’s exactly what I’ve done,” he said.

“Improvements would make a real difference to locals. I’ll keep pressing for action here and I’ll share any response I receive - because when residents raise concerns, they deserve to know someone is chasing answers on their behalf.”

Mr Harley said he would continue raising issues highlighted by residents as he campaigns across the constituency.
