The Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate for Strathkelvin & Bearsden, Adam Harley, is calling for East Dunbartonshire Council to take action to fast-track the necessary repairs and provide clear and regular updates on progress on the reopening of the Bearsden Community Hub.

The Hub remains shut due to the presence of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) - a form of concrete used as a building material which leaving residents - especially local pensioners who rely on its services - facing continued disruption.

It is now set to reopen October 2025, a full two years since it first shut. This is a delay from the initial target of August this year. The SNP/Labour administration has also decided to cut the opening hours of the Hub once it does reopen, despite strong opposition from the Liberal Democrats.

Adam Harley, Scot Lib Dem candidate for Holyrood, said:

"The length of time the Bearsden Community Hub has been closed is simply unacceptable. Many residents have come to depend on the Hub and the lack of access and continued delays have only made matters worse.

"The Council must now do everything possible to fast-track the necessary repairs and accelerate the reopening process. They will also need to provide clear and regular updates on the progress of the reopening.

"My party has consistently called on the Scottish Government to listen to our calls and set up a national fund to help remove RAAC from public buildings."

Vaughan Moody, Lib Dem councillor for Bearsden South said:

“It is more than disappointing the time taken to re-open this hub and the library as well. It is galling that the opening hours of the hub will now be reduced as well.”
